Oak Centre has announced the launch of a new live radio programme aimed at raising awareness about disinformation and equipping the people of Kano with the skills to fact-check and verify information. The programme, which will begin airing on Freedom Radio from Saturday, 5 April, will run weekly at 10:30am and serve as a platform for public education and civic engagement.
Designed to promote media literacy and critical thinking, the radio show will allow listeners to interact with hosts in real time, asking questions, verifying claims, and sharing their concerns about potentially misleading content circulating in their communities and online.
Korede Ogundiminegha, Capacity Building Manager at Oak Centre, highlighted the need for the programme:
“Our goal is to educate the audience about disinformation, what it is, how it spreads, and most importantly, how to identify and challenge it. People deserve to have the tools they need to make informed decisions and resist being misled.”
He also emphasised the importance of creating a space where citizens feel empowered to seek clarity and demand truth:
“This is not just a radio show. It is a civic platform that allows people to ask questions, raise concerns, and verify the information they come across. We want to encourage open dialogue and promote a culture of verification.”
The initiative comes at a time when disinformation is increasingly influencing public opinion, fuelling distrust, and undermining democratic values. By leveraging the reach and popularity of radio, Oak Centre aims to strengthen community resilience and promote a more informed society.
The programme will cover a range of topics, including how to recognise fake news, understand the motivations behind misleading content, and use fact-checking tools effectively.
Listeners across Kano and neighbouring communities are encouraged to tune in, participate actively, and be part of the movement to push back against false information.
