This advocacy project was designed to increase public pressure on the Nigerian government to fulfil its promise of implementing the UNEP recommendations for the Ogoni clean-up. It focused on raising awareness about delays, lack of transparency, and community disengagement in the operations of HYPREP. Six advocacy videos were produced and widely disseminated to spotlight the environmental and social realities in Ogoniland. The project supported journalists with capacity-building sessions and facilitated field visits to the creeks, enabling first-hand reporting on the status of the clean-up.
These efforts helped shift media narratives, amplify community voices, and draw national attention to government inaction. Creative digital content, including infographics, animations, and online campaigns, helped to sustain civic engagement across platforms. The campaign worked closely with civil society organisations to track compliance, analyse government performance, and communicate gaps. Public advocacy tools were used to demand timely fund disbursement and stronger oversight from the Ministry of Environment and the Presidency. Through media engagement and civic pressure, the project contributed to reframing the clean-up as a governance and accountability issue.
This initiative was funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) through the Facility for Oil Sector Transparency and Reform (FOSTER). FOSTER was implemented by Oxford Policy Management.
