AbegNaLie is Oak Centre’s grassroots fact-checking programme focused on conflict-related triggers in high-risk communities. It maps and monitors rumours that can escalate tensions, including those about identity, religion, elections, security incidents and resource disputes, and converts them into timely, verified updates that lower the risk of escalation.
Using familiar Pidgin expressions such as “Abeg, na lie”, it frames verification in language that is relatable, trusted and easy to share. The programme trains influencers and citizens in Kano, Kaduna, Borno, Benue, Lagos and Nasarawa to recognise, document and safely report high-risk claims, and links them to civil society organisations and journalists within the Oak Centre network for triage and public correction.
Community concerns are surfaced and addressed through Mu San Gaskiya on Freedom Radio, creating a real-time feedback loop that challenges harmful narratives, promotes de-escalation and supports early warning. AbegNaLie strengthens local trust, encourages responsible information sharing and builds community resilience against violence fuelled by false content.
