PeaceLens Fact-Checking Hub
PeaceLens is a rapid-response initiative designed to reduce the risk of violence by countering false information in fragile contexts.
Launched during Nigeria’s 2019 elections in Benue and Plateau States, the hub monitored WhatsApp, SMS, social media and community radio for emerging rumours, verified them in Hausa, Tiv and Idoma, and issued timely corrections that local leaders could amplify. Youth and women were trained as fact-checkers and early-warning monitors, turning digital literacy into a community safety tool.
In two months, PeaceLens debunked more than 150 rumours and reached over 90,000 citizens, helping voters in tense areas participate without fear. The model demonstrates that credible, rapid corrections delivered through trusted local channels can prevent escalation and protect civic space.
