Restoring Identity, Rebuilding Dignity
The IDP Rights and Documentation Initiative restored legal identity for displaced persons in north-east Nigeria between 2018 and 2020. Working with community leaders in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, the project organised mobile registration drives, guided families through documentation processes, and ran awareness campaigns in Hausa, Kanuri and Fulfulde so people could access education, healthcare, assistance and civic participation.
More than 35,000 displaced persons obtained at least one form of civil documentation, including birth certificates for children, voter cards and national identity cards.
Beyond immediate service access, the initiative strengthened protection and belonging, supporting pathways back to participation and dignity.
